The Old Parsonage has been converted into the Arthouse Hostel, Launcestons newest backpacker hostel opened on the 2nd November 2007. It has undergone a fitout of brand new beds with fire-retardent inner-spring matresses, new plates, bowls and cutlery in the commercially licensed kitchen, and fire sprinklers and smoke/thermal detectors linked directly to the fire brigade.

The major fitout was the bathrooms, and is now the biggest compliment we get - amongst many compliments. We removed the entire bathrooms including the walls and floors, and replaced them with modern facilities that are clean, well lit and have unlimited hot water.

Catering for backpackers, hikers, student, youth hostel travellers, holiday makers and more - your stay here will be clean, comfortable and most importantly, safe. Every guest will be treated like a VIP.

The commercially licensed kitchen opens into a large, light and airy dining room and quiet lounge, whilst the entrance opens into another dedicated lounge area with space to open your maps, plan your tours, pack your packs and watch some TV on the huge plasma TV. Out the back door ofthe kitchen we have a herb garden and a FREE BBQ in a lovely courtyard.

The entire backpacker hostel has been recently renovated with beautiful paintwork and the original baltic pine floorboards have been polished to a mirror finish. The building is registered as a Heritage Building with the Heritage Council of Tasmania. It is located in the heart of the art and culture area of Launceston, with the Art Campus just down the road next to the Art Gallery and Museum and Inveresk Rail Museum.

We are the Worlds first carbon neutral backpacker hostel along with our sister hostel, Central City Backpackers in Hobart. We are embarking on an urban reforestation program with Launceston City Council to meet the needs of offsetting our carbon production. In fact, we are tripling the requirements calculated to make us carbon neutral, so we can be sure that we are doing our best for offsetting, whilst minimising our footprint.

The manager Deb, and the friendly reception crew wil be able to help you with tour advice, and destination advice, booking accommodation around Tasmania in other backpackers hostels, and generally doing whatever they can to make your stay in Tasmania more enjoyable. You can book tours to Bay of Fires, Freycinet Peninsula, Wineglass Bay, Port Arthur, Cradle Mountain, Mt Field National Park and many more beautiful areas at budget prices.

We are close to the transit centre and the tour buses will pick you up and drop you off right at our door.
